Penguin pages *freebie*

I am loving all of the fun penguin ideas out there. I have just created a couple of pages I am going to use at centers. You can get one here, and another here

The first one is to be used when sorting a selection of books as fiction or non-fiction penguin books.

The next one is for students to use while printing 4 facts they have learned about penguins. Hope someone can use them.

Gingerbread Fun!

I am thrilled with our little gingerbread men. We used foam shapes for the cookies and a puffy paint recipe for the icing. The recipe is so simple - an equal amount of flour, water, salt! That's it. Put it into squeeze bottles and decorate away! (Dry overnight).

I think I will mix up some icing colors next...with foam christmas cookie shapes...how fun!

Adding cookies

I am so excited to begin our holiday centers this week. We are working on many different gingerbread and cookie activities.

I created some cookie adding pages for a math center on the weekend. I usually put these in wipe-off sleeves to save on copying and so I can ask the quick ones to do both sides. You can get the freebie here.

Questions

To help the students ask higher-order questions I use a Q-Chart like this one. The idea is to encourage the kids to ask questions further down and across the matrix...

Whooo questions...

We have spent some time working on our question words.  To emphasize questions that begin with Who, we made paper owls and wrote questions on sentence strips.  Very cute!

Question of the Day

The first month of school flew by! I adore my SK/1 kiddos and we are having so much fun together! Everyday the students move their own magnet to the YES or NO cookie sheet to answer our question of the day.  So simple, and they love it! I just covered the cookie sheets with scrapbook paper, and covered some cardstock with a transparency for the question page (to make it dry-erase).

My ABC bins

I decorated Crystal  Light containers that I had been hoarding saving :)

Patterned paper and a dimensional sticker on each one.

An assortment of items in each bin.  M has - moose, music note, milk, monkey, marble, letter m, letter m puzzle pieces and a magnet.

This is my writing center table. It's regular height, so the chairs are actually boosters from Ikea (years ago). Just freshened up with some bright green paint.

Each little basket has some words or letters to get the kids writing if they are looking for inspiration.  This one has the days of the week words.

Letters for printing, with directional arrows to show proper technique :)

Weather  words.

Word game with paint chips inspired by Pink and Green Mama

Holiday words.

Word bottles.  I used a variety of beans, sprinkles, pom poms, beads, and rice.  These were inspired by Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits

Each bottle has a different theme.   I used sight words, word families, names of the students, months and days, question words, color words, and shape words.  Warning - making these becomes addictive!

Question posters

I love inquiry-based learning and I'm planning to start the year with a review of question words.  I just created a poster set that I put on TPT here.

Getting ready . . .

I still have lots to do before back to school...but I have been spending some time getting my room ready and it's coming together nicely!

The Hungry Caterpillar (made with floor mats and craft foam) decorates the hallway.

These are my file crate seats with Eric Carle fabric. I'm loving the extra storage!

Bright and sunny!

Dr. Seuss Reading Cafe

During our Dr. Seuss unit I adapted our dramatic play center to be a "Dr. Seuss Reading Cafe".  The kids loved it.  They had Seuss menus that they would use to choose a Seuss book....the server would then bring them their book (as well as the accompanying stuffed toy from Kohls).  After they read their book they would fill out a comment card and submit it to their server in the cafe.  It was a huge success!
This is the table with menus ready for customers...

The menu items were delivered in big red bowls -cute!
